Texas Energy Grid: Data Centers' Energy Demand and New Vetting Process (2026)

Texas' energy grid is facing a critical challenge: the state must significantly increase its energy production to meet rising demand, or risk high energy prices and blackouts. However, the new process is not without its challenges. Matthew Boms, executive director for the Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance, noted that many data center connection requests will never come to fruition. Speculators are putting their names in the queue, seeking to capitalize on the "gold rush" of data center development without doing the necessary work to actually get a new data center financed, approved, and built.

Despite these challenges, the new process is a necessary step towards ensuring that Texas' energy grid can support the state's growing energy demands.
